(RALEIGH—Nov. 15) – On Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 1:30 p.m., at the Winston-Salem Convention and Visitors Bureau, N.C. Department of Cultural Resources Secretary Lisbeth C. “Libba” Evans will launch a new Web site for travelers, historians and folks who want to know more about North Carolina. Three years in the making, the new N.C. Highway Historical Marker site captures the stories of the state’s movers and shakers, the landmarks of significance, and some quirks of history.

Web surfers can search markers by geography, topic or key word – from diplomats to duels, politics to prisons, Indian wars to industry – or by a specific title. Each entry carries information about the subject, photographs and related links. It is now available at www.ncmarkers.com.

“Vacationers can plan ‘themed’ travel, while students will find the categories and information helpful for research,” says Sec. Evans. For example, a particular period, such as the Revolutionary or Civil War era, or a look at the state’s writers, aviators, or maritime history, will be just a click away. Early next year, Global Imaging Satellite (GIS) plotting also will be available online to make travel planning easier than ever.

“The site will list all 1,496 state historical markers, and will be one of the most comprehensive web pages of its kind. With the addition of the GIS information, this site will be unparalleled,” says Dr. Jeffrey Crow, director, N.C. Office of Archives and History. As new markers are nominated and approved by the N.C. Highway Historical Marker Advisory Committee, they will be added to the site.
