( RALEIGH—Sept. 26) – Carolina Hurricanes alternate captain Kevyn Adams knows that the valuable information resources and services for local entrepreneurs can level the playing field for business. Adams, spokesman for North Carolina’s Library Card Sign-up campaign, joins local libraries in encouraging businesses to explore the local library and sign up during September, Library Card Sign-Up Month.

“Libraries provide cost-effective information, workforce education, and promote community vitality,” said State Librarian Mary Boone. “To borrow a phrase from the hockey world, a visit to a local library can help keep businesses off ‘thin ice.’”

One study that evaluated the cash value to business of libraries estimates each business saves between $500 and $5,000 annually in expenses. In addition, libraries are good economic anchors. Library users often attach other errands to their trip to the library.

Strong public libraries help attract “knowledge workers” and are often cited as a reason why small businesses choose to locate in a particular community. Libraries serve both as a knowledge center and a provider of programs, exhibits, classes, reading groups, materials and online resources. The library is a center of lifetime learning, and benefits employers through programs ranging from classes in computer skills, business databases and other tools for workers.

Libraries are a valuable business resource for community vitality and economic development. Database, reference and resource materials, plus expert help of the library staff is essential for those looking to start a new business or expand a current one. Such resources are often cost prohibitive for small businesses; at the library they are free for the asking.

Also free is a library card, which opens the door to the latest best sellers, DVDs and books on tape. To sign up for a library card, new patrons should visit their library with proof of residency and photo identification. Most libraries ask that children under age 18 be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The State Library of North Carolina is coordinating the campaign statewide by offering public libraries support and promotional materials.

The State Library of North Carolina, a division of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, partners with communities to develop library service, and coordinates statewide programs for all types of libraries, offers services to state employees, genealogy researchers, and people who have visual and physical handicaps.
